Loch an Eilein - Britain's Best Picnic Site

Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK.  Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland.  Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

LOCH AN EILEIN CENTRE'S ART GALLERY!
After a hugely successful opening earlier in 2010, our Gallery hosts a wide range of fantastic, local artwork. From handmade greetings cards, paintings and craftwork, Loch an Eilein gallery is a fantastic showcase of the artistic talent in this area. Artists are also given the opportunity to exhibit entire collections of their work for a period of time, which means there are  always fresh paintings and craftwork on display.

Current Exhibition: A collection of Photographs by James Gordon
until 14th September 2010
An exceptionally talented photographer who having grown up in Strathspey, has always had an affinity with the nature and beauty of this wonderful area and his appreciation of the landscape continually increases along with his desire to capture the mood and emotion of it all.  Not only is James a talented Photographer but he is also a Framer, his images are therefore showcased in the best possible way with every frame chosen specifically to compliment the image.

This project is being managed by artist Ellie Honeyborne who many of you will recognise from the Ord Ban. As well as displaying and selling art and craftwork, Ellie is organising drawing classes and craft demonstrations. Ellie has strong links with Creative Cairngorms, an association of artists within the Cairngorm National Park, and we enjoy being able to work with local artists to showcase the artistic talent of this area. Rothiemurchus is a place that has inspired artists for centuries and we know that the artwork on display captures the beauty of this landscape and what makes this area so special.

“Rothiemurchus forest is not just trees but a wonderfully rich network of habitats and wildlife, interdependent and evolving.   The conservation of this diverse. living landscape does not happen by accident.  Long-term planning and sensitive use maintain and enhance the forest for future generations. Thank you for helping”
Johnnie Grant

FIRE
Perhaps the greatest threat to the forest and its wildlife.  Just the heat from a disposable barbecue or camping gas stove can cause a fire as can a cigarette end.

DOGS
Please exercise your dog responsibly and keep dogs under control.
Dogs can alarm other visitors and wildlife especially ground nesting birds.
Please clear your dog’s mess from paths and public area, but don’t litter the area with plastic bags!
