Although many think Winter is a quiet time of year on the wildlife front, for the birds and animals of Rothiemurchus it is a time of ultimate survival and working together.
Whilst exploring the Rothiemurchus ancient woodlands you will come across noisy flocks of Chaffinch, Coal tits, Greenfinch, Siskin, Greenfinch & Crested tit. They work tirelessly together searching for food which is now limited, using safety is numbers to keep a beady eye out for predators, such as sparrowhawks, and snuggling closely together when roosting to preserve heat precious.
Red deer can also be spotted when the cold northerly winter winds drive them down off of the hillsides to the shelter of the woodlands. Roe deer can often be spotted early morning or late afternoon grazing in the open farmland.
Winter wildlife spotting is its most rewarding when a blanket of snow covers the forest floor. An early morning visit can be rewarded with the spotting of many mysterious footprints in the snow. You can see how alive the forests are with pine martens, badgers, deer, foxes and occasionally the odd possible wildcat leaving its snowy mark – you will be amazed.
