FARMING
Farming

Rothiemurchus has native forest, natural hill grazing, low level arable land and water in the form of lochs and rivers. Only 2% of the land has sufficient soil to be ploughed for cereal growing but it can nearly all be farmed.

We have reared cattle for hundreds of years and our Pedigree Highlands are sold as the highest quality beef. We also keep some red deer in extensive ‘parks’ so they breed naturally and our fresh rainbow trout is delivered to major retailers such as M&S. About 200 tonnes of the award winning barley we produce is sent to malting distilleries to make the malt whisky for which the area is world famous.
